Believing in Karma in a World of Injustices – Dissertation How Hwee Ong

Despite injustices being widespread throughout the world, many people continue to believe that the world is a just place and that justice is maintained in impossible and magical ways.

In his PhD dissertation, which he defended on 24 March at Tilburg University, How Hwee Ong sought further understanding of how such magical beliefs affect judgment and decision-making. He found that while these beliefs appear to influence judgment with little to no obvious consequences, they do not seem to influence consequential decision-making.

How Hwee Ong wrote his dissertation as a member of the Kurt Lewin Institute. His promotors were Prof. Ilja van Beest and Dr. Rob Nelissen. He is currently working as a postdoc on a multi-disciplinary project on non-evidential beliefs at University of Groningen’s Faculty of Economics and Business.
